The award winning, Organic Community Gardens are a living, breathing, growing reality in the Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Five elementary schools and three middle schools participate in over 200 garden workshops per school year. During and after school, over 120 raised beds were built with the help of six YLDC students and over 1500 garden school students. The Kansas summer provided unrelenting heat and very little rain. This did not stop the YLDC apprentices. Vigilant care and feeding of the gardens kept them thriving and proved to the entire community, the talent and value of this fine team of young people. Garden Director, Mark Manning has linked community partners as resources through mentoring and workshop development, soil testing, tilling, strategic planning committees and literacy involvement. Theatre based garden scripts or children's garden storybooks are developed and presented to the parents and community. A healthy supper, workshop demonstrations and children's theatre is a wonderful way to end the school day with the Organic Community Gardens. Garden workshops use the research model with the children in all workshop curriculums. YLDC students give Pre/Post tests to track the learning process and include an evaluation component.
