EnvironMental combines environmental science, filmaking and editing, script writing, game creation and Public Service Announcements. YLDC apprentices must learn all of these skills to facilitate the programs for the elementary and middle school children. The students choose the mediums that fit best with the neighborhood school. Recycling is a mainstay throughout the programs and only recycled materials are used in all aspects of program implementation. EnvironMental won Bridging the Gap and the EPA Award for Excellence in children's programs. EnvironMental provides creative engagement at Rosedale, Central and Argentine Middle Schools during the day schedule. Adapting the existing science curriculum of KCKPS to the environmental themes, science students use math probability and genetics through coin toss monsters. Environmental toxins become one of the variables in the project. All projects components are made from recycled materials. Rachel Eilts provides EnvironMental Curriculum Development and day workshops as Mentor Specialist. Rebecca Sickbert leads the KIDZONE Extended Day and TREC EnvironMental Team as Mentor Specialist. Six YLDC members co-facilitate with Rebecca. |
