Program Description

SUMMER SCIENCE RESIDENTIAL ACADEMY 

 (KU Campus:  30-50 High School students)

 Academic, medical internship, pro-social, cultural competency enrichment:

  • 90 hours of integrated science, math, language arts instruction

Note:  All Academy instruction is approved for district standards in  science and math, Kansas City, Kansas  Public Schools.  A multicultural staff reflects the student population.

  • 40 hours of ACT and SAT college entrance exam preparation through Kaplan.

  • 15 hours Multicultural Event Preparation and Presentation at KUMC

  • 20 hours of medical internships – KUMC, Swope Health Center, Northeast Animal Hospital, St. Lukes

  • 10 hours of Poetry workshops and presentation at local café  

  • 2 hours Poetry Presentation at the historic 18th and Vine location, Blue Room in Kansas City, Mo. 

  •  Total number of students served through SSA, 2003-2007:  169

  • Total number of possible high school graduates, 2003-2007:  105

  • Total number of graduates, 2003–2007:  105

  • Total number of college entrance, 2003-2007:  99

Urban Transcendence Poetry is led by Glenn North, Poet in Residence of the Jazz Museum  in the Historic 18th and Vine District of KC MO. SSA students and families attend and perform original poetry written in workshops during SSA.
